Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

We will only recommend tooth extractions in Frisco if there is truly no other option for salvaging the tooth, or if it’s a serious threat to your other existing teeth. A few common scenarios when it’s generally the best course of action include:

  • A tooth is so severely damaged or decayed that it cannot remain in the mouth.
  • Teeth have become impacted or can’t erupt properly (often the case with wisdom teeth).
  • Advanced periodontal disease has weakened the supporting structures of the teeth, leading to looseness.
  • Teeth need to be removed to make room for orthodontic treatment.
  • A baby tooth refuses to fall out on its own.

The Process of Removing a Tooth

There are two ways we can remove a tooth: with a simple extraction or a surgical extraction. A simple extraction is ideal when the tooth in question has already broken through the gumline, allowing us to rock it loose until it’s ready to be removed. A surgical extraction, on the other hand, is used when it is trapped underneath. This requires us to make a small incision in the gums so we can access the tooth before removing it section by section.

Important reminder: With both simple and surgical extractions, the first step of the procedure is always to numb your mouth. So, you don’t have to worry – you won’t feel any pain during your time in the treatment chair.

Tooth Extraction Aftercare

We’ll give you a list of aftercare instructions to help you heal comfortably at home. A few general ones include:

  • Taking prescribed or OTC pain medication as directed
  • Using a cold compress to ease inflammation and discomfort
  • Brushing and flossing carefully around the extraction site
  • Sticking to applesauce, plain yogurt, and other extremely soft foods
  • Changing the gauze pads as needed
  • Avoiding strenuous exercise, like running

Around the three-day mark, sensitivity, discomfort, and swelling should start to subside. If you feel like your symptoms are progressively getting worse or you develop a fever, then get in touch with us right away.
